X1.4 solar flare from sunspot region 3697

Ex-3664 which is now numbered as sunspot region 3697 is at it again this time with a long duration X1.4 solar flare (R3-strong) that peaked at 14:37 UTC.

The solar flare was eruptive but the region is still very close to the limb so the eruption was not earth-directed as you can see on this animation from the SOHO/LASCO C2 coronagraph. Sunspot region 3697 will rotate into a more earth-facing position in the days ahead so we might be in for yet another exciting space weather period. This sunspot region keeps on delivering!

M5.7 solar flare

Another sunspot region to keep an eye on is 3691. This sunspot region produced an impulsive M5 event 18:41 UTC. We do not expect this event to be eruptive but it is an earth-facing sunspot region. It doesn't look complex enough for major eruptions at the moment but it should be monitored in the days ahead.
