X1.8 coronal mass ejection

SOHO/LASCO coronagraph imagery is now available to determine the size and trajectory of the coronal mass ejection that erupted from the X1.8 solar flare that occurred today. Careful analysis suggests that this coronal mass ejection has no earth-directed component.

Solar activity reached high levels right at the beginning of 20 December. Sunspot region 2242 produced a long duration X1.88 (R3-strong) solar flare that peaked at 00:28 UTC. It looks like this solar flare is eruptive and launched a coronal mass ejection but will it also come towards earth?

Current data suggests there is a slight possibility for aurora to appear at the following high latitude regions in the near future

Arkhangelsk
Sundsvall, Umeå
The solar wind speed is currently moderately high (580.3 km/sec.)
