Bulletin

Solar activity was at very low levels, no significant flares have been recorded. The Sun remained spotless. No earth-directed coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been observed in the available coronagraphic imagery. The greater than 10 MeV proton flux was at nominal values.

Solar activity is expected to remain at very low levels.

The solar wind speed gradually decreased from 500 km/s to 400 km/s (ACE). The total magnetic field varied between 1 and 5 nT. The direction of the interplanetary magnetic field (phi angle) was predominantly directed away from the Sun (positive sector). Bz was mostly negative but weak with values between -4 and +2 nT. Geomagnetic activity was at quiet to unsettled levels, with the Kp index (NOAA) and the local k index (Dourbes) recording values of 1-3 and 0-3, respectively.

Quiet conditions are expected to continue for Oct 12 with isolated active conditions possible Oct 13 and 14, due to the influence of a negative polarity coronal hole which began to traverse the central meridian on Oct 10.

Today's estimated international sunspot number (ISN): 000, based on 16 stations.
